Thunderstorms Cancel 70 Flights at Zurich Airport: What Travelers Need to Know
Severe thunderstorms have seriously disrupted operations at Zurich Airport in Switzerland—around 70 flights were canceled from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning. More than 30 planes heading to Zurich had to be redirected to Stuttgart, Geneva, and Basel.
What Happened at the Airport
The biggest disruptions began due to prolonged thunderstorms directly over the airport. Initially, 44 flights were canceled: 24 landings and 20 departures. By morning, the total number of cancellations reached 70.
Due to the redirection of planes, there was a shortage of aircraft and crews in Zurich. Therefore, even after the weather improved, passengers might still face delays or schedule changes.
Despite the challenging evening, the airport's operations were mostly restored by morning. However, some travelers had to remain in the terminal for several hours, and some were unable to start their journey on time.
Is It Worth Traveling Through Zurich Right Now?
If you are planning to depart or transfer in Zurich, the bad weather does not mean the airport has completely shut down. However, after such extensive cancellations, the schedule may remain unstable for some time: a plane or crew for the next flight might be in another city.
The smartest thing is not to head to the airport randomly. First, check the status of your specific flight with the airline, and if you have a transfer, ensure that both segments of your journey are still valid. Passengers on morning flights should be especially cautious after a night of thunderstorms.
So, traveling through Zurich is possible, but only with extra time and readiness for changes. If your trip is not urgent, postponing it might be a calmer option; if you must fly, the key is to check your flight in advance and not rely on perfectly synchronized transfers.
