Is it worth going to Kyiv: the capital is once again attracting travelers
Kyiv is returning to the tourist map of Ukraine: in the first half of 2026, the tourist tax in the country increased by 22.6% and reached UAH 174.9 million. The capital has become one of the main centers of this recovery — both Ukrainians and guests from abroad are coming here.
Kyiv — among the leaders in the number of overnight stays
In the first quarter of 2026, the most overnight stays were recorded in the Polyanytsia community in Ivano-Frankivsk region. Kyiv ranked second with 356.1 thousand overnight stays in accommodation facilities.
For the capital, the interest of foreigners is particularly noticeable: over 92.1 thousand overnight stays were accounted for by foreign guests. Ukrainian travelers spent about 264 thousand nights in Kyiv hotels and other accommodation facilities.
These figures do not mean that the city has become an ordinary tourist destination without restrictions. But they show that Kyiv is once again being chosen for short trips, business visits, and getting to know the Ukrainian capital.
What this means for your trip
If you have long postponed Kyiv, now might be a good time for a short city weekend. In the capital, it's easy to combine walks along the central streets, museums, observation locations, and establishments with local cuisine — without the need to plan a long trip.
At the same time, it's better to build your itinerary flexibly. Before heading out, it's worth considering the current security messages, public transport and establishment operating rules, as well as possible changes due to air alerts.
The increase in tourist tax is not just statistics about overnight stays. It is a sign that hotels, restaurants, museums, cafes, and other urban services are once again receiving more guests, and Kyiv is gradually reclaiming its role as a city that people want to visit not just for business.
So if you want a change of scenery, to walk familiar and new routes, and support local businesses, a trip to Kyiv could be a good idea — with sensible preparation and attention to safety. Are you already planning your next stroll around the capital?
