Pont Alexandre III — Paris

Pont Alexandre III — the bridge worth diverting from your route

If you find yourself near the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides, or the Grand Palais, be sure to stroll across Pont Alexandre III. It’s not just a convenient crossing over the Seine, but one of the most stunning urban vistas in Paris — with gilded sculptures, wide perspectives, and a sense of the grand Parisian scene.

Why this bridge deserves attention

Pont Alexandre III connects the Champs-Élysées district with the area of Les Invalides and the surroundings of the Eiffel Tower. The bridge spans the Seine in the very heart of Paris, and its low single-span steel arch is specifically designed not to obstruct the city’s panorama.

It was built between 1896 and 1900 for the 1900 World’s Fair. At that time, the Grand Palais and Petit Palais were also opened nearby, so a walk across the bridge nicely complements a visit to these iconic sites.

The architecture here is grand yet not cold: the Beaux-Arts style is enhanced with Art Nouveau details. Lanterns, cherubs, nymphs, and decorative elements turn the bridge into a kind of open-air museum.

What to look for during your stroll

The most notable features are the four massive 17-meter tall pillars crowned with gilded bronze figures of winged horses, Pegasus. They not only adorn the bridge: the stone supports also serve as counterweights for its steel arch.

In the central part, you can see reliefs of the nymphs of the Seine and Neva. They remind us of the Franco-Russian alliance of the late 19th century, and one of the reliefs depicts the coat of arms of Paris.

It’s best not to rush: take a look at the bridge both towards the Eiffel Tower and towards Les Invalides. The wide perspective, the Seine, and the sculptural decor create that same "postcard" Paris that people often return for.

Who will enjoy it

The bridge is particularly well-suited for a leisurely stroll, photography, and a short break between museums and riverbanks. It’s interesting even for those who usually don’t plan separate routes for the sake of architecture: Pont Alexandre III is easy to spot on the way, but it certainly deserves its own few minutes.

Is it worth going? Yes, if you want to see Paris not just through its most famous landmarks, but also to feel the city in detail — through the light, sculptures, the Seine, and the beautiful perspective. Would you add this bridge to your Paris itinerary?
