Rivne Academic Regional Puppet Theatre is a place where you should take your child for their first introduction to the theater or come with the whole family to enjoy a well-known fairy tale in a new stage format. The theater is located in the center of Rivne, making it easy to combine a performance with a walk around the city, coffee, or lunch.
Here, they don’t just show children’s performances: puppets, music, decorations, and live performances create a separate little world that children quickly immerse themselves in. At the same time, the repertoire is not only aimed at the youngest — the theater's website separately marks performances for the whole family and programs in the baby-theater format.
About the Place
The history of the theater began on December 23, 1975: the first theatrical season was opened in the village of Mezhyrich with the performance "The Little Fairy" directed by Tetyana Kurowska. Initially, the troupe worked as a touring company, performing in cities and villages of the Rivne region, as they did not yet have their own premises. The construction of the theater on what was then called Chervonoarmiyska Street, now named Symon Petliura, began in 1976.
At the end of 2007, the theater received the title of "academic" for its contribution to the development of puppet art in the region and Ukraine. Today, it is a regional theater with a permanent troupe and a repertoire that combines Ukrainian and foreign classics, modern productions, and performances for various ages.
What to See and Do
The easiest way to choose a performance is by the age and mood of your child. For family viewing, the theater stages "Thumbelina" based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, "Cinderella", "Mr. Cat", and "The Painted Fox" based on the work of Ivan Franko. These are familiar plots, but the puppet theater gives them a different sound — with music, stage images, and direct contact with the audience.
For the youngest, there is "Koo-Koo" — a performance in the baby-theater format, described as an incredible journey for toddlers. This option may be well-suited for a child who is not yet ready for a long classical performance. There are also productions with an educational focus, including "The Fun Lesson", which offers a journey through the lands of vowel letters.
Before your visit, it is worth checking the current schedule on the official website: the names of the performances, dates, times, and available tickets change. The program also includes performances such as "Who Brings Happiness?" and "The Little Fairy", which marked the beginning of the theater's history.
How to Get There
The theater is located at: 15 Symon Petliura Street, Rivne, 33028. This is the central part of the city, easily accessible by public transport; there is no separate metro station in Rivne. If you are walking around the center, orient yourself towards Symon Petliura Street and the theater building with the corresponding name on the facade.
Hours and Prices
The theater operates according to the performance schedule, so it is better not to set a universal daily visiting time. The exact start time should be checked in the current schedule. In the schedule provided on the official website, family performances cost 150 hryvnias, while the baby-theater production "Koo-Koo" costs 200 hryvnias; prices and ticket availability may change.
Tickets for individual events can be purchased through the "Buy" button in the schedule. Before your trip, it is worth checking the specific day of the performance, as there are often two showings — for example, at 11:00 and 13:00.
For Whom
The theater is best suited for families with children who can calmly follow a performance for one showing. For a first introduction to the theater, you can choose a shorter or specially adapted production for toddlers, and for older children — a classic fairy tale or a musical story.
Plan to spend about one and a half to two hours for the performance, including arrival at the hall, but the exact duration depends on the production. For a date, this is rather an intimate cultural plan, especially if you continue your walk around the center of Rivne after the performance. Friends will find the theater a light way to return to childhood stories without excessive solemnity.
Visitor Tips
It’s better to buy tickets in advance, especially for weekends and popular fairy tales. Arrive a little earlier: it will be easier for your child to calmly take their seat, look around the hall, and get ready for the performance, rather than rushing in at the last minute.
If your child is still small, choose a daytime performance and pay attention to the age marking in the schedule. Before heading out, check the official website of the theater, as they publish the current performances, times, and ticket prices there. And after the show, you can take your time heading home and enjoy a walk through the central streets of Rivne — the theater is conveniently located for such a family route.
Would you choose a familiar fairy tale like "Cinderella" for your first visit, or would you try the baby performance "Koo-Koo"?
