Moraine Lake: Is it worth the trip?
If you want to see turquoise water against the backdrop of sharp mountain peaks, Moraine Lake is a place that’s easy to picture on a postcard but even better to see in person. The lake is located in the Valley of the Ten Peaks in Banff National Park, and the scenery here is truly the main reason to visit.
What to know before you go
You cannot drive to the lake in your own car: the road is closed to private vehicles year-round. During the visiting season, roughly from June to mid-October, shuttles from Parks Canada or licensed carriers take you there; exact dates depend on the weather. You need to book a spot on the shuttle in advance, so a spontaneous trip may not work out.
In winter, the road is prepared for skiing, and the lake itself is inaccessible due to avalanche danger. If you plan to bike, keep in mind: there is no mobile signal, Wi-Fi, running water, or other services on the road; there are public restrooms near the lake.
Who will enjoy it
Moraine is worth the trip if you love mountain landscapes and are willing to plan logistics for the view. This is not a place you just drop by on your way: transport needs to be organized in advance, but once you’re there, the lake and the majestic peaks around await you. Would you add Moraine to your Banff trip?
