Italian air traffic control failure disrupts flights across Europe

On Friday, October 16, 2026, a technical failure of the nationwide data transmission network supporting Italy's air traffic control services caused delays and cancellations of flights. The problems were detected overnight; initially, backup systems allowed operations without reducing capacity, but from 06:00 local time, restrictions were implemented as morning traffic increased.

The restrictions affected flights departing from Italy, heading to the country, or passing through its airspace. ENAV reported a temporary reduction in the capacity of Italian airspace; an alternative data transmission system was used to maintain air traffic control communication. In ENAV's statement, it was noted that no signs of malicious interference were found.

The disruptions impacted airports in Rome, Milan, and Turin, as well as other cities. At Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos," flights to and from Italy were delayed, and at least three flights from Italian airports were canceled. At the time of the initial report's publication, the time for full recovery was still unknown.

On the same day, ENAV announced that the malfunction had been resolved, the main data transmission network was restored, and capacity restrictions were lifted; traffic was gradually returning to normal. Passengers traveling that day were advised to check their flight status and departure times with the airline before heading to the airport, as schedules could change.
