Bell Tower of St. Sophia Cathedral

The Bell Tower of St. Sophia Cathedral is not just a beautiful vertical structure in the center of Kyiv: you can climb it and look at the historic city from above. If you are already walking near Sophia, this is a great way to add a bit of height, architecture, and panorama to your visit.

About the Place

The Bell Tower stands on the territory of the National Reserve "Sofia Kyivska" at Volodymyrska Street, 24. It was built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, and its architectural appearance was formed throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Initially, it served as the main entrance to the monastery complex from the side of Sophia Square, so it is not only an observation structure but also part of the historical ensemble of Sophia.

What to See and Do

The most pleasant part of the visit is climbing the bell tower and observing the center of Kyiv from above. But don’t rush straight to the stairs: it’s worth first examining the building from the outside, paying attention to the baroque decoration and its place among the buildings of the reserve. The bell tower is part of the museum complex, so it can be conveniently combined with a walk around the territory of Sofia Kyivska.

How to Get There

The address is Volodymyrska Street, 24, Kyiv. The bell tower is located near Sophia Square, in the very center of the city; the landmark is St. Sophia Cathedral. It is convenient to walk to the reserve from the central streets and squares, and the nearest metro stations are "Zoloti Vorota" and "Maidan Nezalezhnosti."

Hours and Prices

A separate ticket for the Sofia Bell Tower costs 100 hryvnias for adults and 50 hryvnias at a discounted rate. There is also a single ticket for several objects of the reserve, including the bell tower; it costs 500 hryvnias full price and 250 hryvnias discounted. The hours of operation depend on the season: the territory of the reserve is open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM in winter and from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM in summer, but check in advance if the bell tower is accessible on your chosen day.

For Whom

Climbing the bell tower will appeal to those who love city panoramas, historical architecture, and leisurely walks. It can be a nice stop on a date or part of a family route if children are comfortable climbing stairs. Allocate about an hour for the bell tower and a brief overview of the surrounding area; if you plan to visit other museums in the complex, you will need more time.

Visitor Tips

It’s best to combine the bell tower with a walk around Sophia Square and the territory of the reserve, and if you have time, with a visit to the cathedral and museum exhibitions. For the panorama, choose a clear day, and wear comfortable shoes: climbing the stairs requires a bit of effort. Before your trip, check the current hours of operation and the availability of the bell tower on the reserve's website, as the schedule for individual objects may vary.

Would you climb the bell tower for the view or would you rather come to see its architecture up close?
