3 Hidden Gems of Serbia — Places That Travel Guides Don’t Mention

Three places for those who want to see Serbia not just from the bus window: earthen towers, mountain forests, and a river winding between cliffs. These are more trips for nature and landscapes than quick stops along the way.

Đavolja Varoš: Whimsical Earth Towers

In southern Serbia, erosion has formed over two hundred earthen pyramids — narrow pillars, some of which are topped with harder stone blocks. This place resembles a fairy tale setting, although its appearance was created by water gradually washing away the softer rocks. If you are interested in unusual landscapes rather than just panoramas from a viewpoint, Đavolja Varoš could be the most unexpected stop on your route.

Tara: Forested Serbia

Tara National Park is mountains, dense forests, and deep gorges; among the most striking natural features of the park is the Drina Canyon. Here, rare Serbian spruces are protected, making Tara suitable for those who want to spend time in nature, rather than just take photos and move on. The park has several access points, including from Bajina Bašta and Kremna, but a specific route should be chosen based on your transport and plans.

Uvac: The River That Paints Loops

The Uvac Gorge is known for its expressive meanders — the twists of the river that are best viewed from the water or from viewpoints above the canyon. You can see rare protected birds on the river, and the reserve itself is known as a habitat for the griffon vulture. Keep in mind that visiting the reserve is only allowed with professional guides who lead marked routes.

If choosing by mood: Đavolja Varoš — for unusual landforms, Tara — for forests and mountains, Uvac — for canyon and river panoramas. Which of these places would you add to your trip?
