The Great Blue Hole features vibrant shades of blue and turquoise.

№31. The Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is a dark circle amidst the turquoise waters of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll in Belize. This stunning place is for those who want to see an unusual marine landscape, but the experience depends on whether you dive or admire it from above.

What’s special about it

The hole is an underwater sinkhole over 300 meters in diameter and about 123 meters deep. Its dark blue color sharply contrasts with the shallow waters of the reef, so it’s best viewed from above to see its nearly perfect circular shape. For divers, it’s not just a view: there are limestone walls and ancient stalactite formations underwater.

The Great Blue Hole is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. So a trip here is an opportunity to see not only the famous sinkhole but also a part of a vast natural system.

Is it worth the trip?

If you’re an experienced diver and are fascinated by underwater geology, this could be a special adventure. Deep diving is not for everyone: it requires proper training and experience, and specific requirements depend on the operator. If you’re not diving, you might consider snorkeling near the reef or taking a scenic flight — the sinkhole doesn’t reveal itself as distinctly from the surface as it does from the air.

You should also consider the journey: Lighthouse Reef is far from the coast, so visiting requires a separate trip by sea or air. If you love remote natural places and are willing to dedicate a significant part of your trip to them, the Great Blue Hole is worth your attention. Would you prefer to see it from a plane or dive underwater?
