Legion of Honor — San Francisco

Legion of Honor is a museum on the quiet coast of San Francisco, where art meets the views of the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s worth a visit if you want to not just stroll through the halls, but spend a few hours in a beautiful place where the building and surroundings are part of the experience.

About the Place

The museum is located in Lincoln Park in the northwest of the city. It was founded by Adolph and Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, and opened to the public on November 11, 1924, as a memorial to 3,600 Californians who died during World War I. The architecture in neoclassical French style references the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris.

Today, the Legion of Honor is part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Its collections include European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, ancient works, and graphics; the museum is also known for its large collection of prints and drawings.

What to See and Do

Leave time not just for the exhibitions: the museum stands high above the coast, and the grounds offer views of the Pacific Ocean and the bay. Inside, you can see art from various eras—from antiquity to European masters; specific exhibitions change, so it’s worth checking the museum's schedule before your visit.

Even if you don’t plan to spend a long time in the halls, the trip to Lincoln Park can be a pleasant walk. After the museum, you can stroll through the park and linger at the viewpoints—especially if the day is clear.

How to Get There

The museum's address is 100 34th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94121. The easiest way to get there is by Muni bus #18: it climbs Legion of Honor Drive and stops right in front of the museum. Buses #1 and #38 stop about half a mile from the entrance, so you’ll have to walk from there.

There is free parking for cars in front of the museum and along its northern side. Don’t leave valuables in your car: the museum advises taking them with you and locking the doors and windows.

Hours and Prices

According to the published schedule, the museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM, and closed on Mondays. A general admission ticket for adults costs $20, for visitors aged 65 and older it’s $17, for students with ID it’s $11; children and teenagers under 18 enter for free. At 4:30 PM, you can visit the permanent collection for free, but this offer does not apply to special exhibitions.

Who It’s For

Legion of Honor is well-suited for a quiet date, a cultural stroll with friends, or a family outing, especially if kids enjoy looking at large sculptures and unusual objects. Plan for about two to three hours for the museum and a short walk around; if you want to leisurely explore the exhibitions and enjoy the views, allow more time.

Visitor Tips

On a clear day, combine the museum with a walk in Lincoln Park: this way, the visit will be about not just the halls, but also the coast and panoramas. If you plan to take public transport, bus #18 brings you closest to the entrance; stops #1 and #38 mean an additional uphill walk.

Before your trip, check the current hours, prices, and list of exhibitions: the museum warns that the schedule and costs may change. Do you prefer to first admire the art or start with a walk for the views?
