Nieuwe Kerk — The Hague

Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague: Is it worth a visit?

If you find yourself in the center of The Hague, Nieuwe Kerk is worth your attention just to see how a historic Protestant church has transformed into a modern concert space. It stands right on Spui square, opposite the modern town hall, making it easy to find, and you can conveniently combine your visit with a stroll around the city center.

History without unnecessary solemnity

Construction of the church began in 1649 when the old Grote Kerk became too small for the growing city. It was completed in 1656. The project was created by Pieter Norvitz with the participation of Bartolomeus van Bassen; the building combines elements of Dutch classicism and baroque and is considered an important example of early Protestant architecture in the Netherlands.

Interestingly, at one time, Nieuwe Kerk stood on an island between canals. Later, the canals were filled in, and today the church is perceived as part of a vibrant urban space rather than as a secluded ancient building.

What to see inside

Don’t expect a typical museum church with a permanent exhibition. The building retains wooden elements from the 17th century, an oak roof structure, tall stained glass windows, and an organ created in 1702 by master Johannes Deisthout.

The interior has undergone modern acoustic changes, so the historic space now primarily functions as a concert hall. The church was closed for worship in 1969 after a lengthy restoration and was later reopened in its new role.

Is it worth planning a separate visit?

Yes — if you love architecture, chamber music, or places where the past is not separated from modern life. Concerts, performances, meetings, and conferences are held here, and the hall is known for its excellent acoustics, especially for chamber music.

However, if you are just passing by, it’s worth at least stopping by the facade to see the contrast between the old Nieuwe Kerk and the modern town hall opposite. A full visit is most justified on concert days, as that’s when the building reveals itself not just as a monument but as a living urban space.

So Nieuwe Kerk is not a must-see "checkmark" for a short trip, but a very nice spot for a leisurely stroll through the center of The Hague and a musical evening. Would you drop by just to admire the ancient building or would you wait for the chance to hear a concert?
