Where Was Mamma Mia! Filmed? Behind the Scenes of Both Blockbuster Musicals

Skopelos: the island where "Mamma Mia!" comes to life

If you love cinema, the sea, and places that are easily recognizable at first glance, Skopelos is worth the trip. It was here in the summer of 2007 that the first Mamma Mia! was filmed, transforming the Greek island into the fictional Kalokairi — a sunny world of pine trees, turquoise waters, and ABBA songs.

Not a set, but a real island

Skopelos is located in the Aegean Sea and belongs to the Northern Sporades archipelago. The film showcased not just one tourist postcard, but various corners of the island: beaches, rocky coastlines, pine trails, and the surroundings of the town of Skopelos.

The most famous stop on the route is the small church of Agios Ioannis in Kastri. It stands atop a cliff, with stone steps leading up to it, and the view from the top is simply magical. This is where the wedding scenes of Sophie and Sky were filmed, as well as episodes with Donna.

Visiting the church is worth it not just for its cinematic recognition. The journey there becomes part of the experience: after the climb, the sea, island shores, and the very atmosphere that made the film beloved by viewers unfold before you.

Beaches with ABBA songs

Kastani is one of the main beaches featured in Mamma Mia!. Here, musical scenes were filmed, including episodes with the songs “Lay All Your Love on Me” and “Does Your Mother Know?”. Temporary elements were built on the shore for filming, which were removed after the work was completed.

Another notable filming location is Glisteri beach, located near the town of Skopelos. Its surroundings can be recognized in scenes with Donna, her friends, and Sophie’s adventures with three possible fathers.

And at Amarantos Cape, cinematic romance blends particularly well with nature: pine trees, cliffs, and clear water create a landscape that invites you to leisurely stroll along the coast. These natural decorations helped make Kalokairi convincing — although such an island does not actually exist in the film.

Is it worth going for film fans?

Yes, if you want to not just see familiar places but feel the difference between cinema and reality. On screen, Skopelos appears as a carefree musical fairy tale, while in person it is a green Greek island with roads to beaches, steps to the church, and real landscapes that don’t require special effects.

At the same time, don’t expect every frame to be recreated literally before you. Some interior scenes were filmed not on the island but in Pinewood Studios near London; additionally, certain episodes were created on neighboring Skiathos and in Damouchari on the mainland.

It’s best to perceive Skopelos not as an amusement park based on the film, but as a beautiful travel destination to which Mamma Mia! has given an additional story. If you enjoy sea views, small churches on cliffs, and the opportunity to recognize film locations simply while walking, the island will certainly not disappoint.

Would you go to Skopelos for the film locations — or are its beaches and tranquil island atmosphere more appealing?
