№29. Trolltunga Rock

Trolltunga is worth the trip if you enjoy long mountain trails and views that truly require some effort to achieve. The rock formation rises 1180 meters above sea level and juts out approximately 700 meters over Lake Ringedalsvatnet — an impressive place, but not an easy walk.

What to Know About the Route

From the P2 parking lot in Skjeggedal, the round trip is 27 km and takes approximately 8–12 hours. If starting from P3 Mogenitopp, the distance shortens to 20 km and usually takes 7–10 hours; in both cases, good physical fitness and endurance are required. The trail is marked, but its length and mountainous terrain make the hike very challenging.

It is recommended that experienced hikers tackle the route from June to September. In other months, a guided hike is advisable: the weather in the mountains can change rapidly, and the trail may be snow-covered. Start early, check the forecast, and bring warm and waterproof clothing, food, and enough water.

Is This Right for You?

If you are ready to spend a whole day on a challenging route for the view of the lake and the famous rock formation, Trolltunga can be a true adventure. However, if long ascents and hours of walking are not for you, it’s better to choose an easier walk in the surroundings. Would you dare to take such a hike for a photo on the edge of the cliff?
