San Francisco Railway Museum: a small museum that's easy to miss — and that's a shame

If you find yourself near the Ferry Building in San Francisco, take some time to visit the San Francisco Railway Museum. This small, free museum about urban transport presents the history of streetcars and cable cars not as a dry chronology, but as part of the city's daily life.

What to see here

The museum is located in the South of Market area, at 77 Steuart Street — right across from the Ferry Building, near the F streetcar line stop. Admission is free, although donations are welcome.

The main theme is the vintage streetcars of F Market & Wharves and the famous San Francisco cable cars. The exhibit features historical items from the Market Street Railway Company and San Francisco Municipal Railway, archival photographs, informational displays, and audiovisual materials.

Particularly noteworthy is an exact replica of a 1911 streetcar driver's cab. Here, you can imagine yourself at the wheel of an old streetcar, making the museum interesting not only for adult transport enthusiasts but also for children.

Exhibition topics include the development of urban railways, the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake, and the history of the transition from rail transport to buses. Don’t expect a large complex with dozens of halls: this is a compact stop that can be easily explored without a tiring route.

Is it worth going?

Yes, if you love urban history, old technology, or want to better understand why transport in San Francisco has become part of its character. The museum is especially convenient to combine with a walk along the waterfront: the Ferry Building, Embarcadero, and historical streetcars are literally nearby.

At the same time, this is not a place for a multi-hour visit. If you need large-scale reconstructions, extensive collections, or real locomotives, the museum may seem too intimate. However, for a free, meaningful pause in the city center — it's a very good option.

Currently, the museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM; on some holidays, the schedule may vary. It’s best to visit when you already plan to be near the Ferry Building: it’s probably not worth traveling across the city just for this museum.

If you’re interested in streetcars, urban stories, and places without pretense but with character, the San Francisco Railway Museum is well worth a short visit. Would you stop by here during your walk in San Francisco?
