How to Experience the Taste of Hong Kong Without Leaving the Airport
If you have a long layover in Hong Kong, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to dash into the city with your suitcase and watch the clock. There’s a way to spend a few hours comfortably at the airport while getting a small but very convincing taste of Hong Kong — at the Cathay Pacific lounge The Bridge.
Eight Hours Between Flights
Condé Nast Traveler journalist took advantage of an eight-hour layover at Hong Kong International Airport and spent it in the business lounge The Bridge. For a traveler after a 15-hour flight, this sounds like a much more pleasant plan than heading straight into the city: you can eat, rest, and not risk missing your next flight.
The Bridge is located in Terminal 1, near Gate 35. The lounge reopened after renovations in May 2025; it was first opened back in 2013 but closed during the pandemic. Now the space accommodates more than 500 passengers and covers about 29,000 square feet.
You Can Really "Taste" Hong Kong Here
The main reason to step into The Bridge is the food. At the signature Noodle Bar, they prepare noodles to order, including wonton soup and dan dan noodles. This isn’t just a snack from a fridge, but a hot dish that’s delightful to receive after a long flight.
You can add a delicate egg tart and a cup of jasmine tea. And outside the windows — a mountain view of the islands of Hong Kong, shrouded in a light haze. Yes, you won’t see street markets, trams, or the city’s night lights, but a few tastes and this horizon convey its character quite well.
Who Should Plan Such a Break
The Bridge is suitable for Cathay Pacific passengers or partner airlines of Oneworld flying in business class. Access is also available to Cathay members with Silver status and above. So, it’s not a universal option for every transit passenger, but for those who are eligible for entry, the lounge can be a very successful way to make use of a long layover.
Whether it’s worth going from the airport into the city depends on the length of the connection, the time for security checks, and your willingness to rush. If after a long flight you crave a shower, peace, hot food, and a view without extra stress, The Bridge seems like a smart compromise. It’s not a full trip to Hong Kong, but rather a neat appetizer — but sometimes that’s just the appetizer you need to want to come back.
Would you choose a calm lounge with noodles and tea or would you still risk breaking out into the city for a few hours?
