1919 — Odesa Film Factory / Odesa Film Studio

In 1919, based on private film factories and studios in Odesa, a single state film factory was created, which later became the Odesa Film Studio; the official date of the studio's founding is considered to be May 23, 1919.

This is one of the oldest cinematographic studios in the world and an important point in Ukrainian film history: it was here that a powerful center for film production was formed, which produced dozens and hundreds of films and is associated with the beginnings of world and Ukrainian cinema.

👤 Myron Grossman, Borisov, Kharitonov; later, Alexander Dovzhenko and Kira Muratova worked at the studio, and among the early stars of Odesa cinema was Vera Kholodna.

🏳 In 1919, Odesa changed hands several times: at the beginning of the year, real power was in the hands of French General Philippe d'Anselme and the French command of the Entente, in April the city became Soviet again, and from August 1919 to February 1920, it was held by the troops of Denikin's Volunteer Army. The residents of Odesa remained predominantly Ukrainians, although the city was then under the control of foreign military-political regimes.
