Chronicle of Chernihiv · Episode 3 · Mysticism
Mysticism — The Antoniev Caves
According to legend, mysterious ghosts lived and appeared in the Antoniev Caves, and the underground complex was considered a place of secrets and treasures.
🔎 How it really was: It is documented that the Antoniev Caves are an ancient cave complex in Chernihiv, associated with the founding of the Antoniev Monastery and the real history of monastic life, rather than mysticism.
👤 Legends about this place are recounted in local history publications and tourist reviews; they are separately mentioned in local editions and excursion materials.
🏳 At the time of the complex's founding, Chernihiv was ruled by Chernihiv princes as part of Rus; the cave monastery was founded in 1069 by Prince Sviatoslav Yaroslavich and Antoniy of the Caves, and the city's inhabitants were Rusyn-Ukrainians of the early Rus period.
👀 Today: Today, the Antoniev Caves are preserved as part of the historical and cultural reserve "Ancient Chernihiv" and part of the Trinity-Illinsky Monastery complex; they can be visited as a museum in Chernihiv.
