Chronicle of Odessa · Episode 4 · Why is it called that
Why is it called that — Bugayivka
The name is associated with bulls: they were raised in this outskirts and also used for the carts that transported drinking water to other parts of the city. There is another version with the same meaning — from the animals that local residents kept here.
Today, this is the historical name of an Odessa locality; in publications about urban districts, its origin is still explained to modern readers, but the name itself has remained as a toponym, a memory of the old agricultural use of the territory.
🏳 At that time, Odessa was under the rule of the Russian Empire; the city's residents were Ukrainians among the multinational population of the southern city.
👀 Today: Bugayivska Street
