Chronicle of Lviv · Episode 3 · The City Changed the World
1853 — Gas Lamp from Lviv
In the Lviv pharmacy "Under the Golden Star," Ignacy Lukasiewicz and Jan Zech invented the gas lamp; this invention went beyond the city as a new, safer source of light for homes and streets.
The gas lamp became one of the first relatively safe and mass-usable sources of light, spurred the development of the oil industry, and changed daily life in many countries.

🏳 In 1853, Lviv was part of the Austrian Empire; its inhabitants were predominantly Ukrainians, as well as Poles, Jews, and other communities.
👀 Today: Today it is associated with the pharmacy-museum "Under the Golden Star" in Lviv, where the exhibition is dedicated to the invention of the gas lamp; there is also a restaurant-museum "Gas Lamp" in the city with a collection of lamps and a copy of one of the first models.
