Chronicle of Dnipro · Episode 1 · Why is it called that?
Why is it called that — Amur-Nizhnyodniprovsk District
The name comes from the historical locality of Amur — a workers' settlement west of Manuylivka; it is not the "Amur River," but a local toponym that has become established in the city's topography.
Today, the name is preserved in the official district of the city as Amur-Nizhnyodniprovsk; after the renaming in 2016, the district became Nizhnyodniprovsk only in official documents, while the word "Amur" is still recognizable in the everyday life of the townspeople and in the city's history.
🏳 In pre-revolutionary times, this territory was part of the Novomoskovsk district of the Yekaterinoslav province of the Russian Empire; the inhabitants were the local Ukrainian population of the left bank settlements of Dnipro.
👀 Today: The Museum of the History of Dnipro preserves the memory of this history, which has materials about Manuylivka and Amur-Nizhnyodniprovsk.
