Moldavanka — Одеса

Moldavanka

Chronicle of Odessa · Episode 2 · Why is it called that

Why is it called - Moldavanka

The name does not come from "little Moldova," but from the neighborhood where Moldovans, as well as Bulgarians and Tatars, settled at different times; city publications indicate that the area began to form back in the 1810s.

Today, Moldavanka remains one of the most famous historical districts of Odessa, but the name itself is still often perceived as purely folk and not obvious to the townspeople; the city press explains its origin precisely by the early settlement of this area, rather than a later legend.

👤 Moldovans

🏳 In the 1810s, Odessa was part of the Russian Empire; sources from this period indicate that the city was governed by Russian administration, and the population of Odessa was multinational.

👀 Today: A publicly preserved marker of this history is the Moldavanka district itself in modern Odessa; city descriptions still record its historical origin and early formation back in the 1810s.
