1705 — Chernihiv Print That Reached Europe

In Chernihiv, at the beginning of the 18th century, the printing house of the Chernihiv Collegium operated, where liturgical and educational books were published; its products went beyond the city and spread in the wider Orthodox world, particularly in Ukrainian and neighboring lands. This was not a local craft center, but a hub of book culture that influenced the standards of education and church printing in the region.

Through these publications, education, church unification, and the cultural authority of Chernihiv as one of the main intellectual centers of the Hetmanate were strengthened; books from Chernihiv worked to spread a common educational and religious practice far beyond the city.

🏳 In 1705, Chernihiv was part of the Hetmanate — a Cossack state under the suzerainty of the Moscow state, and its townspeople were Ukrainians; the city had municipal self-government, regimental and hundred offices, and the Cossack elite, clergy, merchants, and townspeople played a significant role in the life of the city.
